LGBTQ+ Legal Rights and Best Practices for Serving Communities

Addressing the ethics of legal interpreters as compared to medical or other types of interpreters, anti-bias in the context of legal clinic interpreters, and how to elicit information from clients that will improve cultural competence and/or ensure accurate interpretation in the LGBTQ+ context.

Panel addressing cultural sensitivity and competence when working with Queer Latinos, especially those who are transgender and Indigenous. Topics will include ethics around immigration status, gender and sexuality assumptions differing across United States, Latin American, and Indigenous cultures.
Speakers include Monserrat Padilla of Washington Immigration Solidarity Network and Silah Medellin of Entre Hermanos.

COVID-19 has significantly impacted access to justice, especially in communities already experiencing legal barriers. This conversation will provide information about how COVID-19 has impacted LGBTQ+ communities, with a particular focus on Black, Indigenous, and other people of color and rural communities, and will offer an overview of common legal issues arising in LGBTQ+ communities because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees will also have an opportunity to share best practices and litigation strategies for serving LGBTQ+ clients.
